Striker looking forward to linking up with United's new recruit...

Chris Wood has welcomed the increased competition for striking places following Tuesday’s arrival of Swedish forward Marcus Antonsson.

Wood, who ended last season as United’s top scorer with 13 goals to his name, says he is relishing working with United’s first summer recruit, who linked up with the squad at Thorp Arch earlier this week.

“Marcus looks good,” said the New Zealand international. “He’s come in over the last couple of days and I’ve worked well with him.

“It will be nice to start working with him properly and seeing what we can produce.

“Added competition always brings the best out of you. It all depends what position - he could be playing with you or he could be fighting for a position.

“It’s going to be good having that other competition there as well as Souley (Doukara) and Lee (Erwin) that are already here.

“It’s going to be tough going for us to all push for the shirts.”

Wood also praised United’s appointment of Garry Monk and says the new head coach has made a positive impression on the squad during the opening days of pre-season training.

“He did extremely well when he was at Swansea and everybody took notice, especially in his first managerial job,” Wood said.

“I think it’s a great appointment for us – it’s probably one of the best we could have hoped for.

“I’m looking forward to working under him because I think he’s going to bring the best out of the side.

“We’ve had a couple of a meetings and we’ve spoken about things.

“He just seems like a guy who knows his stuff, knows what he wants to do, how he wants this club to be run and how we’re going to do that.

“We’re it enjoying it so far and we’re liking what we’re seeing.

“We all know the first three or four weeks of pre-season are tough. It’s gruelling, it’s double sessions and a lot of hard work. But it’s all worth it come that first game of the season.”
