BOSS PLEASED WITH SAM

Brian McDermott on Sam Byram’s fitness…

United manager Brian McDermott is refusing to put a timescale on Sam Byram's return to senior action - but says he is pleased with the progress the youngster is making.

The young defender played his first 90 minutes of the season this week in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Sunderland at Thorp Arch and he continues to step things up.

Last season’s Player of the Year has not featured for the First Team since the trip to Birmingham City on April 20, but he could now be edging ever closer to a return.

“Sam played 90 minutes on Monday and played well,” said the boss.

“We haven’t put any timeframe on his return yet but he must be getting close which is great news.

“When you talk about transfer deadline days, how much would it have cost to buy Sam Byram?

“He is one of ours and he is coming back into our squad.”

The United boss firmly believes that Sam Byram could play anywhere on the pitch, whether that be in a defensive or attacking role.

“I’m sure that he can play anywhere,” said Brian.

“He could play centre midfield if he liked, centre half, right wing or right back. It wouldn’t be a problem for Sam to play anywhere.”
