The head coach has chosen the following five goals...

Alex Mowatt vs Wigan (a)
Saturday March 7, 51st minute

“It was a clinical finish and a goal fitting to win any game,” said Redfearn in the aftermath of Alex Mowatt’s match-winning strike at Wigan. The 20-year-old’s second-half effort proved to be the difference at the DW Stadium as he took his tally to an impressive eight for the season. Billy Sharp’s through ball cannoned back off former United defender Jason Pearce and into the path of the arriving Mowatt, who let fly with his ‘weaker’ right foot from the edge of the area, leaving Scott Carson helpless as it soared into the net to spark pandemonium among the travelling fans.

Giuseppe Bellusci vs Bournemouth (a)
Tuesday September 16, 82nd minute

“Giuseppe showed great technique to get the ball up and over the wall like he did to put it in the top corner,” Redfearn reflected on Giuseppe Bellusci’s first goal for the club. As a tight game entered the final 10 minutes at high-flying Bournemouth’s Goldsands Stadium, a moment of magic was needed to separate the two sides with the score level at 1-1. United were awarded an 82nd-minute free-kick around 30 yards from goal and up stepped a confident-looking Bellusci. The Italian duly delivered, too, unleashing a wicked strike into the top corner and beyond the sprawling Lee Camp to put United ahead in spectacular fashion.

Luke Murphy vs Bournemouth (h)
Tuesday January 20, 36th minute

“It had a bit of swerve on it and sometimes they go in, most of the time they end up in Row Z!”, remarked a modest Luke Murphy after hitting a stunning winner over Bournemouth back in January. The resurgent midfielder made it two goals in as many games for Redfearn’s side with a sweetly-struck, left-footed effort in front of the South Stand to sink the then league leaders. Some smart build-up play down the right freed up Murphy, allowing him to drive forward before sending a swerving strike hurtling away from Artur Boruc and into the top corner. It meant United ended a winless run of nine games in all competitions, kick-starting a remarkable turnaround in form on a memorable night at Elland Road.

Rodolph Austin vs Watford (h)
Saturday February 28, 19th minute

"It was dipping with pace, it must be one of the goals of the season,” Redfearn said of Rodolph Austin’s unstoppable strike against Watford at the end of February. The midfielder’s third goal of the season, and his tenth for the club, was perhaps his finest in United colours, despite the eventual outcome. Austin latched onto Sam Byram’s knock-down in an unassuming position on the corner of the box, took one touch to tee himself up before looping a stunning half-volley over Heurelho Gomes’ head during a dream start at Elland Road. Watford managed to turn things around, coming back from two goals down, but Austin’s goal remains one of the season’s finest pieces of individual brilliance.

Souleymane Doukara vs Blackpool (h)
Saturday November 8, 31st minute

“Some of the touches, the passing and the movement and the way we countered and moved the ball up the pitch, I thought it was different class,” Redfearn beamed following November’s 3-1 win over Blackpool. A comprehensive first-half display brought all three United goals, including a breathtaking team attempt rounded off calmly by Souleymane Doukara. Byram intercepted a cross inside the United area and began the swift ascent up-field, with Mirco Antenucci and Adryan exchanging passes before the Brazilian glided forward, unlocking the backpedalling Blackpool defence on his way. Doukara, charging forward, was slotted into the area and composedly tucked it into the bottom corner with the finishing touch the move deserved.
