ROTHERHAM: EVANS HAILS DESERVED CUP WIN

The head coach reflects on Saturday's Third Round victory...

Steve Evans felt his side were deserved winners on Saturday afternoon as goals in either half from Mustapha Carayol and Souleymane Doukara sealed an Emirates FA Cup Third Round victory over Rotherham United.

Debutant Carayol struck a stunning opener on the stroke of half-time to bring the Elland Road tie to life, before Doukara made the most of a defensive mix-up to seal Leeds’ progression in the final minute of normal time.

The win, which extends Leeds’ unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions, means the trip to Brentford on January 30 will now be re-arranged as Evans’ side go into Monday evening’s Fourth Round draw.

“The objective before the game was to be in the draw,” the head coach said.

“We’re obviously going down to Ipswich as a team on Monday, so we wanted to make sure we were watching the draw for the right reasons.

“There are so many reasons to be happy tonight. I take no glee from beating Rotherham – the team I sweated blood for for three-and-a-half years – but my loyalty and love lies with Leeds United. People could see my passion on the side.

“We’re in the draw and I think we deserved to win. Our goalkeeper had one save to make which one of my daughters could have saved.

“We had a bit of quality and we went and scored a couple of good goals. The second was through endeavour.

“For the first, people have seen why Liam Bridcutt is here, they have now seen why Mustapha Carayol is here too.

“The wonderful thing about Carayol is that he can play on either flank, he can play as a striker or he can play in the hole.

“You need to love him. You need to love him and I’ve kept in touch with him for a number of years."

Leeds now travel to Ipswich Town for Tuesday evening’s Championship clash, and Evans says the club will continue to work on making further January transfer window additions in the meantime.

“We’ve come through a tough game today,” he said. “Hopefully we can do some business during the week with regard to players coming in.

“If the president has seen my two signings so far by seeing Bridcutt and Carayol’s performances, then it gives me a chance when I ask him for the next ones.”
