STOKES RETURNS WITH A GOAL

Honours even with Hudderfield…

Young United striker Eoghan Stokes marked his return to Under-18s action after injury by netting against Huddersfield Town in a 1-1 draw on Thursday.

Richard Naylor’s young charges dominated proceedings in the first half at Thorp Arch but the visitors defended well to keep the game goalless at the break.

The second period followed in the same fashion but United took the lead through the returning Stokes following good pressure and pushing from the youngsters.

Huddersfield - who are already crowned league champions - denied United the victory with an 85th minute goal but the coach was pleased to see his side end their league campaign with a good performance.

“We played well,” said the Under-18’s boss. “We were the better team in the first half but they defeated well. The second half was much the same.

“We kept putting them under pressure and pushed forward and that eventually told when Eoghan Stokes scored.

“They equalised in the 85th minute with a good goal, but overall I’m pleased with the way the lads played because Huddersfield are a big strong side.

“Huddersfield have also won the league but we were the better team on Thursday. We played some good football so that was also pleasing.”

United: Atkinson, Bennett, Pearce, Purver, Coker, Vann, Lyman, Roper, Stokes (Crouz), Mulhern, Daws (Berry).
