WOOD BACKS HIMSELF FOR GOALS

Striker heading into the new season in confident mood...

Chris Wood was glad to net his first goal in Leeds colours during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Everton, and the striker has backed himself to continue finding the net when the Championship season gets underway this Saturday.

Wood, adding to Alex Mowatt’s opener, wrapped up the pre-season friendly win at Elland Road with a long-range strike which was aided by a deflection as it looped over the head of helpless Toffees goalkeeper Joel Robles.

“It’s nice to score but I wasn’t worried because, ultimately, I know I can score goals in this league,” the 23-year-old said after netting for the first time since his summer switch from Leicester City. “I know I can do that come the start of the season.”

Wood led the line in impressive fashion at Elland Road and the goal proved to be his final contribution of the afternoon as he left the field to a standing ovation from the home crowd, with Steve Morison replacing him in attack.

After his move to West Yorkshire last month, the New Zealand international admits that expectations of him are high for the new season, and he is well aware of the competition for places within the squad.

“As a striker you’re always going to be under pressure and we’ve got a whole squad back at the training ground who are working hard to get the shirts off us,” he said.

“There’s competition throughout the squad but it doesn’t bother me who’s scoring as long as we’re winning games.”

Wood’s pre-season campaign was hampered by a hamstring strain which saw him miss the friendlies with York City and Eintracht Frankfurt, but the striker insists he is now in “good shape” and ready to face Burnley should he get the nod.

He also believes his team-mates are in good shape to get the new season underway after impressing against Everton.

Reflecting on Saturday’s win, Wood said: “It was a good performance by everybody.

“The team played well, we did what we needed to do and we got a positive result.

“I think we’re ready. We’ve progressed well and I’m feeling good, getting there week by week.

“I missed a few games but I’m in good shape. Everybody’s very excited. We want the season to start.”
