NEW BOY BUCKLEY EAGER TO GET STARTED

Loan signing from Sunderland discusses his United move...

Will Buckley says he aims to help the club "get back to where it needs to be" after completing his emergency loan switch from Sunderland.

Buckley’s move to Elland Road, which will keep him at the club until January 2, was finalised on Friday morning, making him available for selection for Saturday’s visit of Birmingham City.

The winger, who will wear shirt number 25, first linked up with the United squad for training at the start of last week and admits he is itching to get back in action after finding opportunities limited in recent months at the Stadium of Light.

“The loan starts today but I started training with the team last week, which was good for me,” Buckley said.

“It’s given me a good week and a half of training with the lads, and it’s probably worked out better the way it’s happened. I’m just looking forward to the games now.”

On interest from elsewhere, Buckley added: “There were a few Championship clubs that got mentioned.

“I don’t think Sunderland were that keen on me going at first but they decided that was probably best for me and best for them, too.

“When Leeds came in, that was the club I wanted to go to.

“It’s a massive club with a good manager. I want to get some games and help this big club get back to where it needs to be.

“I just want to get back to playing football now and I think this is a great opportunity for me at a good club to get back to where I need to be.”

Buckley needs little introduction to the United supporters after several eye-catching displays against the club during his time at Brighton, which included a goal at Elland Road in the closing weeks of the 2012/13 season.

It was the type of form which earned him a reported £2.5million move to the Premier League last summer, and the 25-year-old is keen to reach those heights again – only this time in United colours.

“My aim is to emulate what I achieved at Brighton and hopefully get this club into the play-offs, at least,” he said.

“It’s a big club. Every player wants to play for big teams and this is one of them so I can’t wait to get out there now.

“I’ve not played much football over the last four or five months - I just want to get back out there and show what I can do.

“I made my way in the Championship and that was how I got the move to Sunderland. Hopefully I can come to Leeds and do the same as what I did at Brighton.

“Playing against Leeds was always a tough game. They’re always going to have massive support and it’s always going to be very competitive, because that’s the nature of the club.

“That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to come here. Hopefully I can take those performances from Brighton and take them into a Leeds shirt.”

Having spent almost a fortnight training with the squad at Thorp Arch, Buckley now has a good idea of the type of side he is joining.

“It’s a good young squad,” he said. “There are a lot of young players starting games, which you don’t get very often.

“They’re all willing to learn and that’s what you need to do in the Championship. The games come thick and fast and I’m just looking forward to getting going now.”
