BOTAKA FEELING POSITIVE FOR NEW CAMPAIGN

United winger ready to get started under new head coach Garry Monk...

Jordan Botaka says he has heard positive things about Garry Monk and plans to meet with the new head coach in the coming weeks to discuss his role in the squad as he looks to make an impact in 2016/17.

Botaka, who is keen to help United mount a promotion push next season after enduring a somewhat frustrating debut campaign in English football, believes his style of play can suit the demands of the Championship after getting a taste for the division in his 13 league appearances last term.

Speaking in an interview with Dutch football magazine Voetbal International, the 22-year-old underlined his ambition to prove himself at Elland Road after finding regular first-team opportunities limited upon his summer transfer window switch from Excelsior.

Botaka will return to Thorp Arch later this month on the back of a summer break which has largely been spent on duty with the DR Congo national team, and the winger and his team-mates will begin pre-season under a new boss following Monk’s recent arrival.

“I have heard very good stories about him – his teams play attacking football,” Botaka said when asked about the new head coach.

“I’m going to meet him to talk with him about how he sees my role. I want to succeed at Leeds and I want to do something in return for the fans.

“I once sat in the stands and 30,000 fans gave me a standing ovation and shouted my name – I was stunned. It gave me such a huge thrill. The fans are fantastic.

“I was Man of the Match in two of my first three matches and I think the fans took me into their hearts. I want to return something to them.

“I think I became mentally and physically stronger last season but, of course, it didn’t go as I had hoped – I wanted to play a lot more, so I look back on last season with mixed feelings.

“But I absolutely do not regret my choice to come to Leeds.

“The pace here is very high and it is very tough physically. But I have a feeling that this division really suits me.

“With one or two immediate reinforcements, we will go for all out for promotion to the Premier League next season – that is where this club belongs.”
