IPSWICH: EVANS PROVIDES TEAM NEWS

The head coach gives the latest team news ahead of Tuesday's clash...

Steve Evans says Chris Wood is the only injury concern for United’s midweek trip to Ipswich Town, with the striker dubbed as being "50/50" for the Championship clash at Portman Road.

Wood has been sidelined for United’s last three fixtures after being forced off in the recent 2-2 draw at home to Derby County with a minor hamstring strain just moments after finding the net.

The 24-year-old, United’s top scorer so far this term with eight goals to his name, will now be assessed ahead of the visit to Ipswich, but Evans insists he will not take any risks on the striker’s fitness.

“The only one that we’re not sure if he’ll make the game tomorrow evening is Chris Wood,” the head coach explained. “He’s 50/50.

“But we’re going to give him a good chance. He’s a vital player for us, especially with the way we played prior to Chris going out.

“He led the line magnificently against Derby, so we’re hopeful he can do it.

“We have a no risk policy, though, so if the medical staff say they’re not quite sure, then I’ll make the decision to take him out.

“Other than that, we’re good to go.”

Evans made four changes to his side for Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup Third Round victory over former club Rotherham and now has decisions to make after a number of sterling displays from those who came in, including Mustapha Carayol and Lewie Coyle on their home debuts.

“We’re looking at all of our options,” he said. “We’ll finish our analysis of the opposition as that’s very key to what we do.

“But it’s been about us since I came into the football club and it will be about us on Tuesday night.

“We’ve got options, whether we go 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1. It’s not about tactics, it’s about playing football and getting our players on the ball.

“If we can get our players on the ball, we believe we can give opposition teams a problem.”

As part of their preparations for Tuesday’s game, Evans’ side will undergo a training session at the home of League Two side Cambridge United, where former Leeds midfielder Shaun Derry is the current manager.

“We’re very fortunate that Shaun Derry – someone who is very famous at our football club – is the manager of Cambridge United,” Evans said. “We’re going to be training there en route on their main stadium pitch.

“There will be no excuses for preparations when we get to Ipswich nice and early.

“The preparation will be good and the boys will have some rest time as well to make sure they’re full of energy and ready for what will be a difficult contest at Portman Road.”
