WOLVES: UNITED STILL CONTESTING WITH ILLNESS

Steve Evans provides the latest team news ahead of Tuesday's clash...

Steve Evans says United are still contesting with a bout of illness in the squad ahead of Tuesday night’s visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the head coach has revealed that Sol Bamba and Liam Bridcutt are back in contention for the Elland Road clash.

Bamba, along with midfielder Tom Adeyemi, missed Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Reading due to the virus, with Evans also admitting that “four or five” other players had been suffering in the lead up to kick-off.

Providing an update from Thorp Arch on Monday morning, Evans said: “We’ve still got a bit of an illness in the camp – a couple of the boys who would certainly have started tomorrow night have had to go home from training.

“We’ll see tomorrow morning as to whether that sickness bug has cleared up a little bit. It’s just something which seems to be sweeping through the camp.

“Most of the boys have had it now and we’ve had a couple of new casualties in the last 12 hours.

“We’ve had it all – viruses and suspensions. But we’ve kept our counsel, we’ve never really been ones for moaning.

“Let’s keep the focus on the players that we do have available. That’s important to us.

“We saw that on Saturday with the changes on the bench. Suddenly one or two players came onto the pitch and made a difference and helped us get the win.”

Bridcutt, meanwhile, has been sidelined since sustaining a thigh injury in the 1-1 draw at home to Queens Park Rangers earlier this month. But, like Bamba, the on-loan midfielder is pushing for a return the fold for Tuesday night, although Mustapha Carayol will remain absent through injury.

“We’ve got options and Sol Bamba is back and in training,” said Evans. “He’s a lot better.

“Liam Bridcutt is also ready to come back and play, subject to him coming through training today. We have further options.

“Mustapha Carayol’s hamstring is going to be a problem for a couple of weeks. Whether we can have him back for Charlton and Preston, we’ll see.

“But he’ll certainly miss tomorrow evening against Wolves and over at Hull on Saturday. Other than that, we’re good to go.”
