WE STEPPED UP – REDFEARN

Neil Redfearn gives his Birmingham verdict…

United's caretaker head coach Neil Redfearn said that his side stepped up their game in the second half at Birmingham on Saturday to come away with a deserved point.

United were 1-0 down at the interval but Alex Mowatt secured an away draw for Redfearn’s side after a much improved second half performance.

“I said to them at half time that they were doing alright but just doing that is going to get you beat,” said Neil. “We had to liven up and I reminded them of what the supporters went home feeling after the Bolton game and what they enjoyed.

“I just thought that we stepped our game up in the second half. I thought that the midfield got tighter and I thought we looked more urgent going forward.

“The full backs got in better positions and the substitutes came on and gave us new life and strength, and that proved to make the difference.

“To be honest with you I think that we deserved it on the balance of play. I thought that the second half performance was really good. We played well at times in the first half but we didn’t look like we were really going to score, which is disappointing.

“But you are always going to get games like that and at 1-0 down you are always in the game.

“I just thought that if we could get some momentum and make a couple of changes then maybe we could get something out of the game.”

United had the momentum after Mowatt’s equaliser and Redfearn feels his side could have taken all three points.

“We got in front of their goal two and three times and I think they went a little bit if I’m honest,” added Redfearn.

“They have been in that position at home where things haven’t been going as they wanted it.

“I think that with some steadier finishing and a little bit more composure we could have capitalised on it.”
