SUMMER 2015 TRANSFER WINDOW ROUND-UP

SUMMER 2015 TRANSFER WINDOW ROUND-UP

A look at United's business in the summer transfer window...

The transfer window drew to close at 6pm on Tuesday evening, and the deadline day arrival of winger Jordan Botaka concluded our business for the summer – with eight new signings through the door at Elland Road. They are...

Charlie Horton – Goalkeeper
Previous clubs:
Cardiff City, Peterborough United

Speculation was rife surrounding players coming and going, but our first signing of the summer came out of the blue in the shape of young American goalkeeper Charlie Horton.

The 20-year-old, a USA Under-23s international, joined on a free transfer from Championship rivals Cardiff City, signing a two-year deal at the start of June.

Charlie, who Uwe Rosler describes as a “future number one”, will gain regular playing time with the Under-21s this season while also providing competition for the first-team.

What Uwe said: “We had Charlie on our radar through our goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis – he had worked with him at Cardiff.

“I know the manager and assistant manager of the USA team and they gave him a glowing reference. We’re very happy with him.

“He has fantastic physical attributes and is a really positive character. He really wants to learn.”

Lee Erwin – Forward
Previous clubs:
Motherwell, Arbroath (loan)

The second player through the door this summer, Lee Erwin, arrived with a glowing reference from United’s all-time leading goalscorer Peter Lorimer.

“He’s a young boy, he’s a big lad and he’s strong,” Lorimer said after Erwin penned a three-year deal to move to Elland Road from Motherwell. “He’s definitely one for the future, but he’s got a lot to offer us right now," he added.

The 21-year-old forward, who can play centrally or out wide, ended last season in blistering form for Motherwell, netting five times from their last nine games to help secure their top-flight status.

2014/15 was the Scotsman’s breakthrough season at Fir Park after impressing during a loan spell with Arbroath the previous year.

Erwin is yet to feature in the first-team but has played three times for our Under-21s so far this season, scoring his first goal in last week’s Elland Road win over Sheffield United.

What Uwe said: "Lee Erwin has shown glimpses of why we got him.

“I think he looks an exciting prospect. He has to learn about the game, but there have been a lot of positives so far."

Sol Bamba – Defender
Previous clubs: Palermo, Trabzonspor, Leicester City, Hibernian, Dunfermline Athletic, PSG

Summer signing number three was the return of a familiar face, as Sol Bamba penned permanent terms on the back of his successful loan move from Palermo.

The defender sealed his switch back to Elland Road by signing a two-year deal with the option of a third after lengthy negotiations between the two clubs.

Bamba, 30, made a big impression in his 19 Championship appearances during the second half of last season and captained the side on several occasions.

He was handed the captain’s armband on a permanent basis at the start of this season and has played every minute in the Championship so far.

What Uwe said: “Sol was very important. He has fantastic attributes that are very important for this league.

“I also think he can be a leader in the group because it’s natural to him. He’s been in England and he understands the English culture and mentality of the Championship.

“He’s also been in Italy and speaks several languages and can bridge the gap. He can unify the dressing room. That’s very important.”

Chris Wood – Striker
Previous clubs: Leicester City, Ipswich Town (loan), Millwall, Bristol City (loan), Birmingham City (loan), Brighton (loan), Barnsley (loan), West Brom, Hamilton Wanderers, Waikato FC, Cambridge FC.

Fourth arrival Chris Wood was the subject of a tug-of-war battle in the closing weeks of June, but it was United who managed to secure his services on a four-year deal.

The sought-after striker departed Leicester City for an undisclosed fee after being limited to seven Premier League appearances last season. Chris also spent time on loan in the Championship with Ipswich Town during 2014/15.

The New Zealand international, whose career in English football began at West Brom, is a proven goalscorer at this level after prolific spells with Millwall and Leicester.

And Wood has already demonstrated that in his short time at United so far, scoring three from his last three games, including a spectacular winner at Derby County on Saturday.

What Uwe said: “I think he’s another important piece in the jigsaw. We were looking for a number nine type – like Chris Wood is.

“He’s physical, strong and experienced in this league. He has potential to develop and has his best years in front of him.

“It’s exciting. He already has a proven goalscoring record and I think there are many goals to come. We think that he is the right player.”

Tom Adeyemi – Midfielder
Previous clubs:
Birmingham City, Brentford (loan), Oldham Athletic (loan), Bradford City (loan), Norwich City

Midfielder Tom Adeyemi became signing number five and our second summer arrival from Cardiff after joining on a season-long loan back in July.

The 23-year-old, a product of Norwich City’s Academy, is here with a view to a permanent deal should he enjoy a successful season at Elland Road.

Tom has previously played under Rosler during a fruitful loan spell at Brentford and his finest season at this level came two years ago with Birmingham City, making 40 appearances and collecting the club’s Young Player of the Year award.

Tom’s first competitive goal in Leeds colours came in Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Derby County.

What Uwe said: “I worked with Tom at Brentford and I’ve followed his progress since then. He’s a very competent midfielder with Championship qualities.

“After we lost Rodolph Austin and with the injury to Luke Murphy, we were short in the midfield area. The opportunity to work again with Tom was too good to turn down.

“He will add physicality, dynamism, good athleticism, height and footballing skills to our midfield.”

Ross Turnbull – Goalkeeper
Previous clubs:
Barnsley, Doncaster, Chelsea, Cardiff City (loan), Crewe (loan), Barnsley (loan), Bradford City (loan), Darlington (loan), Middlesbrough

Our sixth summer addition came in the shape of former Middlesbrough and Chelsea goalkeeper Ross Turnbull, signing a two-year deal as a free transfer from Barnsley.

The 30-year-old, who boasts Champions League, Europa league and FA Cup winner’s medals from his time at Stamford Bridge, joined after a successful trial period at Thorp Arch.

Ross featured 27 times for Barnsley last season after joining from Doncaster in the summer, and the former England youth international faced his former side, Rovers, in the recent Capital One Cup tie.

What Uwe said: “Ross is a solid, experienced performer and that is exactly what we need.

“Marco Silvestri did very well last season and he will start as the number one, but he obviously has to keep the shirt – that comes through good performances.”

Stuart Dallas – Winger
Previous clubs:
Brentford, Northampton Town (loan), Crusaders

United’s search for a winger was well-documented until Stuart Dallas arrived from Brentford in time for the opening game of the season.

Dallas, 24, had previously worked with Rosler during his time at Griffin Park, where he made over 75 appearances during a fruitful three-year spell.

The Northern Ireland international moved to Elland Road for an undisclosed fee at the start of last month, penning a three-year deal with the option of a fourth.

Dallas has been ever-present in the starting line-up so far this season and assisted Chris Wood’s goals against Sheffield Wednesday and Derby.

What Uwe said: “Like the other signings we’ve made, he has his best years in front of him. He can play on the left and on the right.

“He can interchange positions, he’s an intelligent player.”

Jordan Botaka – winger
Previous clubs:
Excelsior, Club Brugge, Belenenses (loan)

Final signing of summer 2015, Congo international winger Jordan Botaka, arrived on a two-year deal from Dutch side Excelsior on deadline day.

The highly-rated 22-year-old, a former Club Brugge player, was a regular fixture in the Eredivisie before starting his “new adventure” at Elland Road.

Botaka will link up with his new team-mates at Thorp Arch next week after returning from international duty with Congo, and he could make his debut against Brentford on September 12.
