EVANS RELISHING DERBY DAY SUPPORT

EVANS RELISHING DERBY DAY SUPPORT

The head coach previews to Saturday's Yorkshire derby with Huddersfield...

Steve Evans says he is relishing the prospect of leading United into Saturday’s Yorkshire derby with Huddersfield Town, which is set to draw the biggest Elland Road attendance of the 2015/16 campaign so far.

On the back of three consecutive Championship victories, the crowd is on course to beat the season-high of 27,672 for the opening day draw with Burnley back in August.

“We have to thank the Leeds United supporters, as they’re going to turn up in such big numbers,” Evans said.

“We’re learning that it’s going to be close to 30,000. On the back of three wins you think that you might get a few extra supporters in to cheer on the team, but those numbers are quite staggering.

“I say it every week and I’ll keep on saying it for as long as I serve this football club, I’m very humbled to serve these people.

“At times we’re undeserving of their support in the numbers that they turn up, but hopefully we’ve been deserving of it in the last three games and we want to make it four on Saturday.

“If we were challenging for that play-off group, I think it would be nearer to 40,000 fans than 30,000 inside Elland Road.

“That’s just the power of this football club. It’s wonderful to be associated with.

“You never realise the sheer size of it until you’re inside of it and you look at what two or three wins can do. This city needs a successful Leeds United.

“We’re all working desperately hard at Thorp Arch and at Elland Road to make that happen. That will continue to be the focus.

“But we’re taking it one game at a time and one hurdle at a time. We want to climb the next hurdle against Huddersfield.

“This is a local derby, where form goes out of the window. But we’ll be backed by a fantastic support and I know what a win will do to send us into the international break.”
