Reserve boss team boss pleased with display...
United reserve team manager Neil Redfearn declared himself happy with his side's first outing at Elland Road this season after Tuesday's game against Newcastle.
Goals from Mikael Forssell and South African international trialist Matty Pattison secured a 2-0 win for Redfearn's charges in a behind-closed-doors friendly.
"Newcastle brought a strongish side, they had a bit of ball and we had to work hard and show patience to win possession, but I thought the attitude of the players was spot on," said the coach.
"They were first class and I thought we played some great football, and we took our chances. With a bit of luck we could have scored a couple more goals.
"In reserve team football you're only as good as your pros and the young kids benefit, particularly playing on a big stage like Elland Road."
The opening goal came from Finnish international Forssell, who caught the eye with another hard-working display.
"He's done brilliant and when he gets his chance I'm sure he'll take it," said Redfearn
"He has a tremendous work ethic and for someone who has played at the highest level he's very uncomplicated.
"He still wants to learn and wants to do well and he loves the game. You can see that. He's infectious and makes other people play."
Redfearn also praised fellow goalscorer Pattison and his midfield partner Nathan Turner.
He said: "They both showed good discipline and awareness to screen and break up attacks, which allowed the dangerous Robbie Rodgers and Lloyd Sam freedom to link up with Mikael."
Another senior player to feature was Ben Parker, who completed the full 90 minutes as he continues on his road to full fitness after injury.
"I thought Ben was different class," added Neil.
"His passing was good, he had a good wide man to contend with, he got in some great positions and he got plenty of legwork in and did really, really well."
