Ross McCormack celebrates his winner

Simon Grayson was beaming after watching his Leeds United side end a barren run by staging a late, late show at Elland Road against Burnley.

An own goal two minutes from time and a winner from Ross McCormack five minutes into added time secured a first win in five games after the visitors had earlier taken the lead after their only real attack of the second half.

"We were staring down the barrel of another defeat and with five minutes to go you're looking to see if you can get anything from the game," said the boss.

"Fortunately we've had two opportunities and a slice of luck which is something we hadn't had earlier in the game.

"We battered them. We had an opportunity with them having 10 men, we created chances, their keeper made some great saves, and things just didn't quite drop for us.

"They had one shot and scored and you think it's another of those days, but the players responded. They were criticised after the Barnsley game, we had a team meeting, we watched the DVD, and I asked them to do certain things and the players who came into the team contributed to that."

Grayson made five changes to his starting line-up after the 4-1 hammering at Barnsley 48 hours earlier and among those were debutant Andros Townsend, who has joined on loan from Tottenham, youngster Zac Thompson, and defender Alex Bruce, who was recalled from a loan spell at Huddersfield.

"We brought new players in," said the boss.

"I thought Zac Thompson was excellent both in midfield and at right back and Andros Townsend came in and affected the game. We've missed having someone like that over the past few weeks and months. He can run the ball and give the back four a chance to get up the pitch.

"Alex did well as well and looked composed. Obviously we still have a lot of work to be done but hopefully we can achieve that and go from here."

Elland Road erupted when McCormack poked home the stoppage time winner and the manager embarked on a celebratory run down the touchline towards the Kop.

"I'd been struggling with my knee for a few weeks and at one stage I was going to go down on it, but I would probably have been crippled for the rest of the season," he laughed.

"Those celebrations and the emotion of it told you what this place is all about. I'm passionate about my job and my football club and it a massive result for us.

"I'm delighted for everybody, particularly for the supporters. It sends everyone home happy and hopefully we can now kick on for the rest of the season."
