United manager Simon Grayson said he hopes his young players will draw on the experience of Tuesday's Carling Cup third round defeat at the hands of Manchester United.

The visitors scored three times before half-time to secure a comfortable passage through in the competition on what was a disappointing night for United.

"When you look at their team, with the strength they have, the quality they have, and the internationals they have, they gave us a footballing lesson," said the Leeds boss.

"What you don't realise is that it isn't just the way they pass the ball around, it's the way they work so hard as a team.

"We had an early chance which they cleared off the line and if that goes in it's different, but they were comfortable after that. They were able to break quickly and punish us and that's what they did.

"We contributed to our own downfall as well. Too many of our players overindulged themselves and didn't pass the ball well enough. That means you are on the back foot and chasing the game again. What we have to do is learn from the experience with all the things we need to do on a regular basis.

"If we'd have gone in at 2-0 at half-time we might have had a chance. I said to the players let's make sure we don't concede, but we didn't really threaten. It shows you how good they are.

"We have to learn from the experience. The younger boys will learn about that, and the movement, and how they passed it around."
