Ross McCormack celebrates

Two-goal hero Ross McCormack insists Saturday's result against Crystal Palace was more important than the performance.

Ross and his team-mates went into Saturday's game frustrated by a start to the season that has seen a run of decent performances produce little reward. Indeed, only one win left United in 19th place going into the first international break of the campaign.

"It wasn't about the performance against Palace," said Ross, who scored our first and third goals in the 3-2 win.

"The few weeks off came at the wrong time because we had been playing well without getting results. Saturday was about the three points and we got it.

"We set ourselves a target of winning on Saturday. There is a balance between performances and results, and it's been going the wrong way I suppose this year so far, but we weren't fussed about that on Saturday."

Palace enjoyed the better of the opening period and Eagles boss and former Leeds loan man Dougie Freedman was disappointed his side left Elland Road with nothing to show for their efforts.

"We probably sat a bit deeper than we wanted in the first half," said Ross.

"They had some pace up front so you have a catch 22 in that do you push up and risk getting caught or do you sit deeper? But they put the pressure on well and they had some good chances. They will feel aggrieved that they deserved a point."

The Scotland international took his goals tally to six for the season, though, when he scored the all-important winning goal.

"Confidence is running through me," he said. "I said that last season if I got a run of games I was confident in what I could do.

"There's some good strikers here, and good competition, but it's a good position to be in when you have that shirt."
