Simon Grayson at Southampton

United manager Simon Grayson admitted Saturday's defeat at Southampton was a shock to the system after his side's unbeaten pre-season run.

Two early goals put the newly-promoted Saints in command before a third early in the second half effectively sealed the game. Max Gradel did pull a goal back for Leeds, from the penalty spot, but it was too little too late as United left the south coast nursing a 3-1 reverse.

"It was a shock to the system when you consider six days ago we played so well against Newcastle," said the boss. "We were a million miles away from that.

"Against Newcastle we had passion, purpose, and desire - on Saturday we had none of those things. Too many players went out and did their own thing rather than things together that they were told to do. If you do that as individuals you won't get the result as a team and that's where we came unstuck.

"Everything we did in training was geared towards how Southampton played. We knew they would throw it out to their centre-halves and pass it through midfield, but people didn't do what they were asked to do in terms of pressing and working. They didn't take that responsibility on themselves to do what we worked on all week. If you don't what you are asked the team will suffer and that's why we got beat. Credit to Southampton, they look a good side.

"We did have spells where we did okay. We started both halves okay, but gave away goals. We showed signs of our naivety again and the players have to take responsibility for that, but we didn't deserve to get anything out of it. When you don't put teams under pressure you don't deserve anything and when you allow good players to play they will murder you at times."
