Left-back targeting match action...
Defender Ben Parker is hoping Leeds United's pre-season trip to Scotland will give him the opportunity to prove himself all over again as he looks to get back in the reckoning at Elland Road.
The former Academy youngster has endured a two-year long injury nightmare, punctuated by two mini returns to action, and he has undergone a whopping SEVEN operations during his time on the sidelines.
But gutsy Ben was back with the squad for pre-season training last week and while admitting he is still building his fitness up, he is determined to make an impact.
"It's been a really tough week, especially for myself because I only started running two weeks ago so I'm still playing catch-up," he said.
"It's been good to join in with the boys and I'm taking it session by session but it's good to be involved and I just want to work.
"I've still got time to prove myself and build my fitness up. I've had no reaction, so fingers crossed I'm feeling fine and fit and by the time we get to Southampton I'll be on the team sheet. I'm looking forward to going to Scotland and hopefully getting a game.
"I know I've got loads to prove, not only to the manager here, but everyone at Leeds United. Everyone has been brilliant with me - the physios have been fantastic - and it's my turn to repay them by playing week-in week-out and showing what I can do. I know I can do that and produce the goods."
Since Ben first sustained an injury two years - against Exeter City on the opening day of the League One promotion season - the left-back berth has changed hands several times. Only George McCartney, on loan last season, kept the shirt for any length of time.
While the manager is actively looking to recruit, Fede Bessone has returned from a loan spell at Charlton last season and the versatile Aidy White can play anywhere on the left hand side.
"Fede is a fantastic player and it hasn't happened for him so far," said Ben. "Aidy can play there, George was there, and they're all fantastic players, but it's strange that no one has nailed down the spot.
"From my point of view that's good because if I can get the opportunity I intend to grab it with both hands."
