United manager Simon Grayson handed Jake Livermore his full debut in place of Barry Bannan in the midfield, and he also brought in Paul Connolly for the injured George McCartney with Eric Lichaj moving across to left back.

The sun was beating down in south east London and the Den had long since sold out for a clash between two sides who have developed a rivalry in recent seasons.

As ever, the atmosphere was lively with both sets of fans making themselves heard, and it was the home side who won a couple of early corners as they looked to respond to their first full house of the season.

But Jack Smith was also called upon to make a headed clearance from a Robert Snodgrass cross as United won an early corner.

Millwall goalkeeper David Forde had the first save to make when he tipped a Max Gradel overhead kick over the bar - but an assistant referee's flag would have seen the effort ruled out.

Leigh Bromby was also called upon to make a timely challenge on Steve Morison, when the Millwall striker threatened, but it was largely a scrappy opening 15 minutes or so.

There were three stoppages too during the early exchanges with Jonny Howson, Andy O'Brien, Morison, and Paul Robinson all suffering knocks.

And it was the home side who drew first blood in the 24th minute when James Henry curled a hotly disputed free-kick into the top corner. Kasper Schmeichel could only get one hand on what was a well-placed strike.

Things got worse for Leeds on the half-hour when Liam Trotter stabbed home an Andros Townsend corner to double Millwall's advantage.

United looked to respond immediately, first Snodgrass tested Forde, then Lichaj almost barged his way into a great position. Snodgrass was also booked after reacting to a challenge from Trotter as temperatures raised. From the free-kick, Neil Harris headed Henry's delivery over the bar.

Henry was next to be booked, for a foul on Gradel, as United were awarded a couple of free-kicks.

United looked to have got back in it on 38 minutes when Gradel created an opening for Luciano Becchio, but the striker's finish was somehow turned wide of the mark by a Millwall defender. Bradley Johnson also sent an effort wide after a clinical break by United.

There were four minutes of stoppage time added on and Snodgrass and Gradel felt United had claims for a penalty shout for a handball, but it was Millwall who ended the half on the front foot, Schmeichel being called upon to punch away a corner.

Grayson made a change at half-time with Davide Somma replacing Snodgrass as United looked to force a way back into the game.

Millwall goalkeeper Forde had to punch away a corner inside the opening couple of minutes as United started on the front foot. But, that early spell was broken up by a free-kick for a foul on Neil Harris, and Schmeichel had to react quickly at the other end as Millwall launched it forward quickly.

Neverthless, Leeds came back again straight away with another constructed attack, and this time, Becchio was able to finish off a good move by firing the ball beyond Forde to bring United back into the game.

It was just the boost Leeds needed, and with 40 minutes still left on the clock, it was game on again.

Millwall responded by winning a corner when Schmeichel was adjudged to have got the final touch on a Morison shot which went into the side-netting.

But it was Forde who had to get down well to deny Gradel after the United goalkeeper launched the ball forward and Jonny Howson played the striker in.

With United now looking to take the game to Millwall, things were really threatenening to open up at both ends.

But the home side added a third goal in the 62nd minute in bizarre circumstances. Harris went down in the middle of the midfield,  but referee Scott Mathieson allowed play to advance with Millwall on the attack. A shot at goal hit O'Brien - leading to shouts for handball - and Morison reacted the quickest to nip in and beat Schmeichel to make it 3-1.

Five minutes later, the home side created another chance, but Henry's shot went across the face of goal.

With 16 minutes left on the clock, Grayson made his second change of the game, replacing Connolly with Barry Bannan, prompting Johnson to move to left back and Lichaj across to the right.

United continued to huff and puff, but it was the hosts who went close again on 80 minutes when a far post cross from deep was stabbed just wide of the mark.

Ross McCormack was introduced to proceedings with eight minutes to go as United went with three out and out strikers for the final stages.

But Schmeichel had to make another decent save, low to his right, to keep out a Henry free-kick in the 84th minute, and Harris was also guilty of heading wide after a good cross from Townsend.

When Leeds found a way through, Bannan picking out McCormack, the Scot was denied the chance to shoot by an offside flag and, in stoppage time, a Gradel ball was just too powerful for McCormack.

In the third minute of stoppage time Somma headed a Bannan free-kick over the top, but there was time for a consolation when O'Brien headed home a Lichaj throw-in with what p;roved to be the final touch of the game.
