Lloyd Sam celebrates

Winger Lloyd Sam was delighted to complete 90 minutes in a training ground friendly this week - and the former Charlton man is determined to keep the competition for places keen.

Lloyd scored the winning goal in a behind-closed-doors game against Sheffield United at Thorp Arch and said the game was an important exercise in terms of fitness.

"It felt good," said Lloyd. "It's been a while since I've played 90 minutes in the reserves or the first team so I needed it.

"If you're not playing and getting proper match fitness there's nowhere else to get it from so it was definitely useful.

"I've just been building up my confidence to full sprint and I'd say that's back."

Likeable Lloyd has had something of a stop-start campaign interrupted by injury. He started 12 of the first 15 games, but two minor injuries strains have seen him confined to the bench since September.

"The season started well and it's been frustrating on a personal level," said Lloyd.

"I've not started a game since September so that's my goal to start sometime soon.

"It's been a strong team for a lot of the season. Competition has been there all season.

"There's been good players in my position with Max and Snods playing really well, creating and scoring goals so it's tough.

"The only thing I can do is keep trying hard in training and doing well in these games."
