Alex Bruce battles with Shelton Martis at Doncaster

Summer signing Alex Bruce is setting his standards high after impressing on his full league debut for the club.

The former Ipswich Town defender was one of five introductions to Simon Grayson's starting line-up at Doncaster Rovers on Friday, and the centre-back could consider himself unfortunate not to pick up the man of the match award, following the 0-0 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium.

"I thought I did okay, but there's always room for improvement," said Alex.

"For my debut, keeping a clean sheet was pleasing. I was desparate to do well.

"It is frustrating when you're not in the team, and I've always thought that if you want to sit on the bench there's something wrong with you.

"When you come to a club like Leeds and you see the fantastic support and the big atmospheres you want to play.

"Hopefully I took my opportunity and I want to keep my standards high and stay in the team."

Having suffered a 5-2 reverse at Barnsley just 72 hours before the Doncaster game, Grayson had called on his players to respond at the Keepmoat.

"We were all gutted after Barnsley," said Alex, who was an unused substitute during the Oakwell defeat.

"We let the supporters down and let ourselves down. The Leeds fans - who were fantastic again on Friday - wanted to see a performance where we dig in and show pride in wearing the shirt.

"You deserve criticism when you get beat five and it's not good enough. We obviously wanted to put on a performance on Friday and get a clean sheet.

"We bounced back from the disappointment and were unlucky not to come away with three points at Doncaster.

"Our mindset was not to get beat and we did that. A lot of teams go there and don't come away with anything. We were organised and we made Doncaster play long balls which they are not known for.

"We're delighted with a point, now we move on and get ready for the next game."
