Richard Naylor celebrates at Watford

United skipper and match winner Richard Naylor felt his side were well equipped to deal with a "scrap" at Watford on Saturday.

The captain's sixth minute goal proved decisive, but it was his heroics at the other end, along with his team's defensive efforts, that repelled a griity Watford side.

"We knew what to expect," said the skipper. "It was a proper battle.

"They get it forward into the box and make it hard for you. We had to head the ball a lot. We had to stand up and be counted and we did that well.

"We didn't pass as well as we'd have liked, but they get in your face and you have to dig in and get results against teams like this.

"You don't want to get sucked into their style. We thought we could play better, but credit to them for stopping us playing.

"It was backs to the wall, we had to scrap and fight at times, but we did that and we're very pleased.

"Things are coming together nicely. There's good competition all over. It's very strong and looks good for the club."

The goal was Naylor's first of the season, coming in his 450th career appearance, and the moment helped erase the memory of his unfortunate own goal against Millwall last weekend.

"It wasn't much of a goal, but they all count, especially after last weekend," added the skipper.

"It turned out to be the winner so I'm made up.

"Last weekend was disappointing with the own goal, but there's no better way of erasing that than than getting the winner and getting another three points."
