Dave Somma scores against Millwall

United manager Simon Grayson was left deliberating over how high the performance against Millwall on Saturday compared to other good displays during his tenure as Leeds boss.

A double strike from substitute Davide Somma added to Lloyd Sam's third goal of the season as Leeds came from behind to win the game 3-1.

Afterwards it was put to the Leeds boss, that the performance was among the best of his 18-months as United manager.

"There's been a lot of good performances," he said. "You automatically think of Man United, but I thought Saturday was up there.

"We were excellent in terms of all-round performance. We worked hard, created good chances, and the game could have been over at half-time. We'd had chances cleared off line and hit the woodwork a few times.

"The big thing for me was the way we responded from going behind. That shows a lot about their character and belief.

"We can put out a team to pass and create chances, but you have to create an inner belief so you can respond quickly and they did that.

"It's something to build off. We've achieved a good result, we've set our standards and they can't afford to slip below that.

"I was delighted for the fans. They made some noise, and they know what the rivalry is like. They've turned us over a couple of times, but we got one back on Saturday."

Not for the first time, it was an inspired substitution that proved decisive.

Striker Somma, back from suspension, scored within three minutes of arriving on the pitch and netted a second in stoppage time to make it 3-1.

"It's nice to have him available," said the boss. "He's worked hard during pre-season and he's played games to build his match fitness.

"We've not had him before, but the signs are there we have a player in our grasp. He will be delighted with his performance, he's got to force his way into all our plans now.

"It's not a bad way to make an impact on the fans. He has to keep working hard, but hopefully this will give him a lot of confidence and belief."
