United manager Simon Grayson named an unchanged team for the visit of Millwall, although he did tinker with his system, switching from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2.
Sanchez Watt was handed the striking role alongside Luciano Becchio, and the on-loan youngster had one early shot blocked following some good build-up play.
Some more good play from Leeds ended with Watt attempting to chip Millwall goalkeeper David Forde from distance, the ball flying narrowly over the top.
United made a good start to the game and Watt again found himself on a good position, but was crowded out by the visitors defence.
But it was Millwall who took the lead inside the opening 15 minutes, when their first real sortie forward led to an own goal. Steve Morison supplied a cross from the right and when Richard Naylor went up with Kevin Lisbie for the ball, the Leeds skipper headed beyond Kasper Schmeichel.
United's response was to carve out another opening, Bradley Johnson's header against James Henry prompting appeals for handball.
When Leeds came forward again Jonny Howson was denied when through on goal and the ball broke to Becchio who lifted his shot over the bar.
On 25 minutes, Howson again showed good feet to work himself an opening, but on this occasion his shot came back off the woodwork.
United were absolutely dominant, and when the lively Lloyd Sam beat visiting goalkeeper Forde, Darren Ward scrambled back to clear the ball off the line.
The equaliser finally came on 32 minutes when Sam bagged his third goal of the season. The wide man again capitalised on some good build-up and smashed the ball home from the edge of the box.
Leeds almost bagged a second moments later, Neil Kilkenny's teasing cross only just failing to find the head of either Becchio or Neill Collins.
As the game headed towards half-time, it had become a complete and utter battering.
Watt was denied twice following great build-up play, again involving the rampant Sam, the latter resulting in some brave goalkeeping from Forde.
And as Leeds maintained the pressure, Howson hit the post, and Bradley Johnson went close from a corner.
It was by far United's best 45 minutes of the season, but for all the domination of the game, Grayson's side looked set to go in at the break with honours even.
But it was the visitors who came to life in stoppage time and Schmeichel was called upon to make his first real save when he came off his line to deny Danny Schofield.
It took Millwall an age to return after the half-time break, the league leaders no doubt looking to combat a Leeds side who had penned them,in their own half for much of the opening 45 minutes.
The second half had started as a more even contest as Millwall looked to get a foothold in the middle of the park, but it was still Leeds who were looking to make the running.
The visitors had a couple of opportunities as did Leeds, Becchio was denied by Forde, but while United still looked the better side, Millwall had stemmed the flow of the first half.
When United did fashion out a half-decent chance Forde raced off his line again to deny an advancing Becchio.
With 15 minutes remaining, Grayson handed Davide Somma his seasonal debut, replacing left-back Fede Bessone with the striker as Leeds looked to force the result.
And the change paid dividends within just three minutes when after Watt returned a cross from the right back into the middle with a low centre and Somma hammered the ball home for his first Leeds goal.
United continued to press and after Watt went close, Forde clawed away a Sam effort that came back off the bar.
There was a minor stoppage late on when Johnson received treatment after a clash, but Leeds were edging ever close to a first league win since promotion back to the Championship.
Andrew Hughes was introduced in the first of four minutes of added time in place of Sam, who was given a great ovation by the Elland Road crowd.
But that was nothing compared to the ovation moments later when Somma hammered home United's third goal of the game, following a great cross-field ball from Howson.
