Kasper Schmeichel

Born-winner Kasper Schmeichel was quick to draw on the positives after Leeds United's pre-season opener in Slovakia - despite suffering a 1-0 defeat.

Kasper played the opening 30 minutes of the first Slovakian outing as a sharp MFK Ruzomberok side nicked a 1-0 victory.

"The game ticked all the boxes except the result," said Kasper.

"We're only a couple of weeks in so it's about fitness. We wanted to win, but you take the positives as a team.

"It's about getting your timing and your eye in. They were sharp and quick and we were a bit rusty in places.

"They looked ready to go so it was good to come up against them. If we'd have been at the same stage I think we'd have beaten them.

"There was one where he got across me and nicked it on to my shoulder, but that's about timing for the defence to block them off and for me to get there.

"I'm not going to say I'm happy because we lost. I want to win always, it doesn't matter what it is. You also want to get into a winning habit."

Kasper was one of three United goalkeepers given 30 minutes in the game with Alan Martin and Shane Higgs also tasting the action.

There is a competition in all areas and a real battle looks set for places.

"That can only benefit Leeds United," said Kasper.

"It's great that there is competition and the standard is very high."

One player who seized his chance to impress was striker Dave Somma, who is vying for places with Billy Paynter, Luciano Becchio, Mike Grella, Max Gradel, and any further striking additions should Simon Grayson strengthen further.

"I played against him last season for Lincoln and he was a big threat," added Kasper.

"He looks the real deal and I was very impressed.

"I wouldn't just single him out though because there's many who are impressive and will have a big impact next season."
