Tresor Kandol battles against Grimsby

Leeds United reserves have won the Totesport.com League East Division title for the second successive season.

Neil Thompson's side beat Grimsby Town 3-0 at Elland Road on Tuesday afternoon to overhaul both Middlesbrough and Hartlepool to take top spot.

United had to better Boro's result at Bradford and were three goals to the good early in the second half of a fairly one-sided contest with Grimsby.

Mike Grella had put Leeds ahead inside the opening 20 minutes with a terrific finish and Tresor Kandol doubled that advantage when he scored moments before half-time.

With Lewis Turner and skipper Will Hatfield working hard in the middle of the park, and Grella and Kandol providing added experience up front, Leeds were always in control against Grimsby.

The third goal came early in the second half, courtesy of Aidy White, and with Leeds industry and work-rate proving decisive the result was never in doubt.

Word filtered through that Boro were losing their must-win game at Valley Parade, and although they equalised in the dying moments, they couldn't find a winning goal to dislodge Leeds from top spot once again.

United: Martin, N Turner, Marques, Trialist, White, Booker, Hatfield, Baxendale, L Turner, Kandol, Grella. Subs: A Watson, R Jones, Lenighan, Trialist, Taylor.
