Elland Road

Leeds United moved within touching distance of top spot in the Totesport.com League East Division on Tuesday night after beating league leaders Middlesbrough at Elland Road.

Goals from Bradley Johnson and Tresor Kandol secured United's reserve side maximum points against a strong Teesside outfit as United made it four straight wins.

Johnson opened the scoring in 13 minutes with a sweetly struck volley before Kandol sealed the points 17 minutes from time.

While the United side included a number of experienced players, the Middlesbrough starting line-up featured Jeremie Aliadiere, Chris Riggott, and Jonathan Grounds, and a sprinkling of England youth internationals.

But it was United who made the brighter start and were ahead before the midway point thanks to a great finish from Johnson.

And the decisive second goal came at the end of a terrific move. A long free-kick from Alan Martin was flicked on, Mike Grella held the ball up before sending it out wide to Nathan Turner. The young full-back delivered a great cross and Kandol headed home from close range.

The win was enough to lift Neil Thompson's side to within a point of Boro with two games to play. Leeds entertain Grimsby next Tuesday (2pm) while Boro take on Bradford.

United: Martin, L Turner, Marques, Lowry, Parker (N Turner), McSheffrey, Hatfield, Johnson (Payne), White, Kandol, Grella. Subs: Watson, R Jones, Baxendale.
