Players line-up for minutes silence

Sky Sports have moved to apologise for not screening what was an impromptu minute's silence ahead of Monday's game at Yeovil Town.

As previously agreed, both clubs were wearing black arm bands to mark the 10th anniversary of the murders of Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight, but Sky, club officials, and many fans were caught unaware when the game was also preceded by an unplanned minute's silence.

We had held a minute's silence at Elland Road on Saturday, believing it appropriate that the majority of our fans were able to pay their respects in that manner, and had informed both Yeovil and Sky that our travelling fans would also be paying their own respects at Huish Park by turning their backs for the first minute of the game.

But after both sets of players staged an impromptu gathering on the halfway line ahead of kick-off on Monday, referee Kevin Wright felt it appropriate to blow his whistle to commence a minute's silence.

The scenes were not shown on Sky's match coverage, and a Sky Sports spokesman said: "At Sky Sports we always try to give the utmost respect to a minute's silence, or applause, before a live match.

"But we were not aware that there was going to be any tribute at yesterday's match. Nothing had been mentioned to our production team and our reporter at pitch side was also unaware, as were match officials and club representatives.

"We knew that there had been a tribute at the last Leeds home game, on Saturday, but did not anticipate one at Monday's live game. We would never intend to miss the minute's silence and no lack of respect was intended. We were simply caught by surprise.

"We have spoken to the clubs and to officials involved to discuss the issue. The tributes from the players and fans have also been mentioned on Sky Sports News throughout this morning.

"We can only apologise to those upset by this turn of events."
