United manager Simon Grayson made two changes to his side following Saturday's 3-0 defeat at home to Swindon Town. Max Gradel came in for Mike Grella and Leigh Bromby returned to the defence with Shane Lowry dropping to the bench.
The game marked the 10th anniversary of the deaths of Leeds fans Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight and while both teams wore black armbands and the match preceded by a minute's silence, the travelling United fans also paid their respects - and made a protest against the lack of justice against the killers - by repeating the scenes from Istanbul 10 years ago by turning their backs on the first minute of the game.
Having suffered four successive defeats, United had slipped to fourth in the table and were in need of a confidence boosting result in the south west. But it was the home side who had the first real raid of the game and Shane Higgs had an early save to make.
United responded quickly, though, forcing Yeovil on to the back foot, and Robert Snodgrass lifted a shot on to the top of the net after 12 minutes. Snodgrass also forced Alex McCarthy into making a save at full stretch as United enjoyed a good spell of pressure. The home side also had to defend well when Jermaine Beckford looked to get round the keeper.
But Yeovil also fashioned out a couple of opportunities, the second of which saw a shot into the side-netting.
Leeds were looking to move the ball around, but when an opening was created for Beckford, referee Kevin Wright brought play back for an earlier infringment, handing United a free-kick around 40 yards out.

United immediately scored from the set-play. Neil Kilkenny knocked it wide, Jonny Howson lifted the ball into the box, and skipper Richard Naylor was on hand to score with a header which looped over McCarthy to make it 1-0. It was United's first goal since the 4-1 win at Tranmere five games ago and, given that Leeds hadn't lost after taking a lead this season, was real encouragement for all.
Almost immediately after the re-start Beckford was foiled by McCarthy and, moments later, the striker fired wide of the mark after Gradel pulled the ball back.
The goal clearly made a massive difference to United's confidence and Gradel was next to test McCarthy with a sweet left foot strike after a great initial ball from Kilkenny.
And the resultant corner saw United make it 2-0. Kilkenny found Naylor and the club captain directed his header home to score his second goal of the game.
You could see the confidence visibly return to United and Grayson's men started the secoond half on the front foot, Naylor again getting two headers in on goal following two early second half corners. Fellow central defender Neill Collins also got in on the act on 50 minutes when he headed at McCarthy after Howson had a shot blocked.
But it was Naylor who again won a vital header following a free-kick, allowing Gradel the opportunity to try his luck with a shot that was blocked.
United were in complete control as the game headed towards the hour-mark, Beckford forcing McCarthy into making another save on 58 minutes. The Yeovil keeper pulled off an even better save moments later, following a Snodgrass shot, and from the resultant corner, Naylor was denied his hat-trick by a last ditch clearance on the line.
Naylor was again in the mix, creating the space for Gradel to force McCarthy into making another superb block from his powerful strike.
On 63 minutes it was the desperate foot of Craig Alcock that denied Leeds after a move that saw Gradel and Kilkenny involved.
But Yeovil got themselves a foot back in the game on 66 minutes when Dean Bowditch finished off a move by tucking the ball across Shane Higgs and into the far corner.
Higgs, who had had little to do, also had to react well to cut out a cross when a re-vitalised Yeovil came forward again. Collins also had to make a decisive challenge as the home side looked to apply some pressure for the first time of the game.
When the visitors got another sniff of the target, on 74 minutes, Shaun MacDonald failed to trouble Higgs with a shot which was over the top. Bowditch also failed to hit the target with a header while Micky Doyle cleared a Gavin Tomlin off the line.
As the game headed towards the final five minutes, United were being asked to do some defending as the home side rallied in search of an equaliser.
With just 90 seconds of normal time remaining, Grayson handed Sanchez Watt his debut, in place of Beckford, and also brought on Bradley Johnson for Kilkenny.
Four minutes of stoppage time gave the hosts one final spur and United were relieved to see Andy Welsh lift a shot over the top after some desperate defending.
There was till time for Watt to make one terrifically timed challenge in the middle of the park to thwart Yeovil for a final time before the whistle went on United's first league win since mid-March. With Colchester drawing against Millwall and Swindon stil to take the field against Tranmere, the win was enough to lift United back into second place.
