Simon Grayson at Exeter

United manager Simon Grayson admitted there were no excuses for his side's disappointing display at Southampton on Saturday.

United crashed to a 1-0 defeat on the south coast with a performance that left the boss fuming.

"I was vey disapppointed," he said. "We didn't play anywhere near our capabilities and what we had shown previous to that.

"We have standards and we never reached them. A lot of things we have done well we didn't do.

"It was uncomfortable in the first half. We never tested their keeper. We had a couple of shots, but that was about it.

"It's not enough if you want to win games. You have to be dogged and win your battles, but we were lax and too many didn't play well enough.

"We were fortunate at half-time to be still in it because it could have been three or four.

"They are a good side, they have spent a lot of money and should be in the Play-Offs even with the 10 points they've had off, but that's no excuse.

"You hope the players don't think they have to just turn up and win a football match.

"There was a good crowd, it was a good pitch against a top team and it's what weve been about this season.

"We just have to accept the defeat and move on to Millwall. The results elsewhere did help, but we don't want to be relying on other teams."
