Simon Grayson salutes the fans at Tranmere

Simon Grayson had said after the weekend draw with Brentford that he felt a big win was "just around the corner" - and he was proved right on Tuesday as his Leeds United slammed four past Tranmere Rovers.

United dominated the Prenton Park clash to emerge 4-1 winners with goals from Jermaine Beckford (2), Robert Snodgrass, and Luciano Becchio lifting Leeds five points clear in the promotion places.

"We said after the weekend a result and a big performance was just around the corner," said the United manager.

"We fought and we scrapped when we had to, we showed quality when he had to, and we took our chances. We made it look comfortable at times with a battling performance.

"We knew we had to approach it in the right manner and be professional. Minds were focused and there were a lot of positive aspects.

"I was disappointed we gave a goal away quickly after going 2-0 up and at 3-1 the next goal was vitally important. We had to maintain what we were doing in the first half and we did that.

"We were composed on the ball. It's what we needed and what's been coming.

"You could sense over the past week we've been getting back to that. You can't get too carried away, we have another 11 games to go, but if we can replicate that performance we will be a handful for everyone."

Beckford took the plaudits with a two-goal haul, but it was the overall team performance which really caught the eye with United looking both clinical and composed.

"There were a lot of good things and when it's your game in hand you need to take advantage," said the boss.

"There was some good movement, Jermaine and Luciano chased their back four, but I thought we looked solid at the back and our midfield was excellent. On Saturday we didn't get our rewards, but at Tranmere our quality came through.

"We need to maintain that level as we go on. I've been positive all along because I've believed that wasn't far away.

"Now our focus turns to the weekend. We have three big cames coming up and we know we can win them."
