Jermaine Beckford celebrates his leveller against Brentford

United manager Simon Grayson was left with mixed emotions after Saturday's 1-1 Elland Road draw with Brentford, and he admitted: "Nobody said promotion was going to be easy."

Grayson was happy enough with the performance, but was left frustrated by an outcome that saw his side pick up a solitary point from the visit of the Bees.

"I was frustrated with the result, but I thought our performance was good and we deserved to win," he said.

"On another day we would have won quite easily, but sometimes things don't go as you would like.

"That's why you can't get carried away when you get results. Nobody said promotion would be easy. Brentford came to stifle us on Saturday, but I was pleased with how we played.

"You can't win every game. They were six points off the relegation zone and they weren't going to come here, lie down and say 'here's your three points.'

"Nobody makes it easy. We have an exepectancy level of winning and when you don't people get disappointed, but we've said all along this club will get promoted on the back of everyone, the players, the staff, and the fans.

"If you keep playing well, results will go for you."

United had enjoyed all the play until Brentford took a surprise lead when Ben Strevens bundled the ball home from close range on the hour. Jermaine Beckford scored United's equaliser, pictured celebrating, 13 minutes later.

"In the first half we passed it well and with a lot of quality, and got balls in the box," said Grayson.

"The first goal is vital and they got it through a lack of concentration at a set piece and during the build-up to it.

"A large part of games are played in peoples heads and you can't switch off. Up until that moment, they never looked they were going to score.

"We created some good chances after that - Snoddy had a couple of decent opportunities - and we got a goal back, kept pushing forward, and showed the desire to go on, but the winner didn't come."
