United reserves suffer third successive defeat...
United reserves suffered a third successive league defeat after going down 2-0 at Newcastle United on Monday night.
Neil Thompson took the opportunity to have another look at trialists Rhema Obed and Jordan Hibbert, the latter picking up a booking.
The game was only given the go-ahead after close inspection by the referee, following heavy rain, but a crowd that included former Leeds striker Alan Smith watched United fall two behind during the opening period.
The first goal came from Phil Airey after Ryan Donaldson seized upon a clearance from United goalkeeper Ryan Jones, and it was 2-0 shortly after the half-hour. Airey was again the goalscorer with a powerful finish after good work by Shane Ferguson.
United were also forced into a change before half-time when Davide Somma picked up an injury.
Leeds were more solid in the second half, but the only chance of any real note was saved by Tim Krul after Andy Robinson fed Sam Jones, who struck his shot well.
Airey did have an opportunity for his hat-trick in the final minute, but Jones made the save.
United: R Jones, Obed, Darville, Hatfield, Milne (S Jones 46), Watson, L Turner, Hibbert, Whitwell, Somma (Baxendale 40), Robinson. Subs: , Cairns, Payne, Booker.
