Leeds United manager Simon Grayson was still without Jermaine Beckford and Paddy Kisnorbo for the trip to Leyton Orient, but he also took the chance to install Max Gradel up front and recall Bradley Johnson and Neil Kilkenny to the centre of the midfield.
Orient were unbeaten in five games and the Londoners were rewarded with their highest crowd since United's visit in April 2008, and it was a lively start to proceedings.
United were almost in front inside the opening 10 minutes when Gary McSheffrey capitalised on a defensive error, but his chipped effort landed on the roof of the net with Orient goalkeeper Jamie Jones well adrift. Bradley Johnson also screwed a shot wide as Leeds made a real positive start.
On 15 minutes, Robert Snodgrass delivered a superb cross into the box which Orient cleared to safety as McSheffery and Luciano Becchio arrived at the right time.
The early pressure was all Leeds and Snodgrass was next to try his luck when he smashed a left foot effort over the top after more good build-up play.
United's passing and movement during the early exchanges was terrific and the ability to switch play quickly was causing the home side all manner of problems. One such move resulted in Adam Chambers heading a Snodgrass cross clear from the danger zone when Becchio was waiting to pounce.
On 24 minutes, goalkeeper Jones came to Orient's rescue when he clawed away a goalbound header from the lively McSheffrey. The loan striker had made a superb start to the contest with his intelligent attacking runs proving problematic for the home side.
The onslaught continued as United applied the pressure throughout the opening 30 minutes, and it took some great defending from the hosts to keep Leeds at bay. When Snodgrass showed more trickery to work an opening, and evade a desperate tackle, Johnson arrived at the near post but was unable to convert.
Snodgrass was also next to have a shot blocked following more good build-up play, and Johnson fired a free-kick wide on 42 minutes. Moments later, after Orient had cleared away one corner, Jones was called upon to make another superb save, this time from a well-struck effort from Bromby.
United had dominated the opening period, but went in without a goal to show for the dominance, and Grayson was looking to see his side ram home that advantage in the second period as his players again started brightly.
Gradel had a shot deflected into the arms of Jones just three minutes into the second half and when Johnson picked out a great run by Snodgrass it took some good defending to deny the Scot.
Richard Naylor was next to go close with a left foot strike after a McSheffrey free-kick came back off Gradel and sat up for the captain.
Still the one-way traffic continued as the game headed towards the hour-mark - Leeds were terrific all across the park - but for all the pressure, United were still chasing that elusive opening goal.
On 61 minutes, Ben Chorley made a decisive clearance following a quick free-kick involving Neil Kilkenny and Snodgrass, and moments later, Gradel shot over the top. McSheffrey also put one over after more good play around the box.
Ankergren was finally called upon to touch the ball again on 64 minutes when Nicky Adams tried his luck from distance with Orient's second effort of the afternoon. The home side were seeing a little more of the ball, for the first time all afternoon, and as the game headed into its final 20 minutes, patience was going to be the key for Leeds.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, Grayson replaced Gradel with Mike Grella as the manager looked to find the key to unlock the route to goal.
It was threatening to turn into an afternoon of frustration for Leeds as the game entered its final 10 minutes. United had totally dominated the contest, but a single point was looming large for Grayson's men.
And that single point was prized away on 83 minutes when Adams whipped in a cross from the left and Tamika Mkandawire rose well to send a looping header beyond Ankergren to give the visitors an ill-deserved lead.
Suddenly, United were chasing a game that Grayson's men had been in firm control of for the biggest part. Jonny Howson was immediately brought on for Kilkenny and when Leeds won a corner in the 85th minute there were nine men in the Orient box and one sweeping on the edge.
Still United pressed and four minutes of stoppage time gave hope.
And the equaliser United so richly deserved came from the boot of Orient's Charlie Daniels in the 94th minute of the game after a Bromby throw-in caused all manner of problems in the home defence.
