Ryan Harley celebrates Exeter early goal

United manager Simon Grayson said he felt his side's slow start to the contest at Exeter City on Saturday proved decisive as Leeds tumbled to a second league defeat of the season.

On a very heavy pitch, United went 1-0 down inside the opening five minutes and were eventually beaten 2-0 after the home side added a second goal late in the game.

"I was more disappointed with the way we started than anything else," said the boss.

"We knew it would be difficult conditions, but we were still in the dressing room for the first 10/15 minutes. We knew it was heavy, but we played as though it was a dry pitch.

"It was a capacity crowd, looking for an upset, and that's exactly what happened. You can't start the way we started.

"By doing that we gave them a foothold in the game with the early goal and in the end we couldn't respond.

"I thought we had a go in the second half and put them under pressure. We got crosses in and we just didn't get the breaks.

"And then the second goal killed the game off."
