Davide Somma

South African striker Davide Somma netted twice for Leeds United in Tuesday's behind-closed-doors game against Middlesbrough at Thorp Arch.

United scored a third goal, courtesy of a trialist winger, but it was Middlesbrough who edged the contest 4-3.

The game marked another step for centre-back Rui Marques who completed the full 90 minutes with no ill-effects.

"Rui came through fine which is important and it was good to see him back," said reserve team manager Neil Thompson

"Dave Somma got two goals, and there were a lot of positives to take out of it.

"Rui played and it was Dave's second game back after injury so it was pleasing."

Along with the trialist winger, the coaching staff took a closer look at Argentine central defender Walter Garcia, who was handed his first run-out.

"He did okay," said Thompson.

"He played centre-back with Rui. It was a different type of game to what he is used to. He did some good things and some not so good things.

"It's important you see him in a game situation."

A number of first team squad men were handed a run-out with Andy Robinson, David Prutton, Paul Huntington, Alan Sheehan, and Alan Martin among those to figure.

"It's important the lads get minutes under their belt," added Thompson.

"It was 4-3 to Middlesbrough and it could have been more to either side.

"I felt the goals we gave away were sloppy, but equally we created plenty of good chances and could have had four or five ourselves.

"But it's important they get minutes in because you never know when they may be needed.

"It is difficult for the boys who want to be playing first team football, but they realise that they have to keep themselves topped up by playing these matches."
