Leeds United reserves continued a fine unbeaten start to the season by beating Newcastle United at York on Wednesday.

Neil Thompson's side had raced into a 3-0 lead shortly after half-time, but the visitors pulled back a couple of late goals to set up a tense finale.

United had set the tone for the contest inside the opening four minutes by taking the lead, and the goals kept coming.

Enoch Showunmi was the first goalscorer of the night when he seized upon a poor back pass and delivered a good finish to make it 1-0.

Showunmi and Andy Robinson also fired over the top during the opening exchanges, as United looked the better of the two sides.

Niall Ranger did go close for the visitors on the half-hour mark when his angled shot rolled across the six-yard box, and moments later, the striker had a great opportunity to level when Ryan Donaldson won a penalty when under pressure from two defenders.

Ranger stepped up but Ryan Jones proved equal to the spot-kick, pulling off a good save.

And Newcastle, under the stewardship of former Leeds midfielder Alan Thompson, were made to pay before half-time when Davide Somma latched onto a Showunmi flick-on to deliver another good finish to double United's advantage.

The visitors had a couple of early half-chances in the second period, both falling to Ranger, but it wasn't long before Leeds were three goals to the good and cruising.

Robinson was the provider with a terrific pass for James Baxendale, and the young midfielder delivered a finish that any striker would have been proud of to make it 3-0.

United continued to dominate the game and after David Prutton had a shot saved and Robinson went close, Showunmi was denied his second of the night when he had an effort cleared off the line.

But Newcastle did get a foot back on the ladder with 25 minutes remaining when Donaldson converted a low cross to reduce the arrears.

And Donaldson was the provider just three minutes later when he supplied a cross which saw strike partner Ranger volley beyond Jones to make it 3-2.

Things opened up for both sides and after Robinson tried an audacious overhead effort for Leeds, Showunmi also went close again.

In reply, the impressive Jones again saved well, this time from Matthew Green from distance, but there were few other dramas as United went on to collect the three points.

United: Jones, Darville, Williams, Sheehan, L Turner, Baxendale (Payne), Prutton, Hatfield, Robinson, Showunmi, Somma.
