Sam Vokes in action against Norwich

Striker Sam Vokes says he jumped at the chance to join Leeds United on loan when he heard of the club's interest.

The 19-year-old Welsh international joined United on Friday afternoon, but his arrival was only publicly confirmed when the team-sheets were exchanged ahead of Monday's game against Norwich City at Elland Road.

Sam has joined from Wolves on loan, and he favoured a move to Leeds ahead of interest from clubs in the Coca-Cola Championship.

"I think this place speaks for itself," said Sam.

"It's a massive ground, a great set-up, and the club is pushing at the top of the league which is where you want to be.

"There's a great history behind the club as well and that's what you want. I'm hoping to play games and this is a great place to do it.

"I played here a couple of years ago with Bournemouth and Monday night reminded me of what a great club this is.

"We lost 2-0 that day and we went down, but I played with Max (Gradel) for Bournemouth that day and the game sticks in my mind."

Sam, who was a key member of Wolves' promotion winning squad last season, made his United debut on Monday as Leeds returned to the top of League One, following Jermaine Beckford's last-gasp winner against Norwich City.

"It was a great game to be involved in," said Sam. "To finish it off Becks scored a great goal.

"Becks had a chance just before and I think we thought that was it, but fair play to him.

"He's been great with me since I came, and he showed how clinical he is.

"They're a good bunch of lads here. They don't give in, they carry on to the end, and that's good.

"It's games like Monday that help you win promotions, when you play against the bigger boys and you keep going to the end and get the win."

Sam has joined the club on loan until January 1 and admits he is looking to play as much as possible and play his part in the promotion bid.

"I'd trained over the weekend and it was great to be involved in a massive game like that in front of a great support," he added.

"If I'm playing games that's what I want to be doing."
