Shane Niggs is mobbed after saving a penalty at Southend

In-form goalkeeper Shane Higgs insists Leeds United must keep picking up the points as the jostling for early leadership of League One continues.

United assumed pole position after a goalless draw at Southend on Friday and Simon Grayson's men remained joint-top with Charlton after Saturday's matches.

"It's still very early in the season," said goalkeeper Shane.

"We've just got to keep concentrating on picking up points to stay up there in the top-two, get to christmas and push on.

"It's a tough league. Generally we've played well and we have to keep it that way, but there's a long way to go.

"We drew on Friday, but we'll be looking to win again on Saturday and push on again."

Shane made a superb second half penalty save from Lee Barnard at Southend to keep the scores locked at 0-0. The United keeper had studied Barnard's two spot kicks against Leyton Orient the previous weekend when one was disallowed, and he went low to his left to make the save.

"I was pleased," he said.

"It was one of those instances where you can be a hero and it was vital to get a clean sheet, and pick up a draw.

"I thought we were unlucky with the decision and was pleased to make the save.

"I thought Southend worked hard, and if you don't win the game you want a draw.

"It's a tight pitch down there, and they ratted and made it very difficult for us."
