South African striker nets debut goals...
South African striker Davide Somma bagged a debut brace for Leeds United reserves to secure a 3-0 win against Rotherham United at Elland Road on Tuesday.
The new signing scored twice in the second period after Josh Falkingham had netted a first half opener as United eased to a first league win of the season.
Simon Grayson again used a reserve game to hand a number of his senior players a outing, and United more than deserved their victory against a Rotherham side who offered little in the way of a threat.
Heavy rain prior to the kick-off had made the pitch greasy, but there was little in the way of the ball zipping around during a dour opening 30 minutes.
Both Falkingham and Neil Kilkenny fired wide while Casper Ankergren made his only save of the first half when he got down well to deny Jason Taylor.
Somma almost fashioned a goal from nothing on 25 minutes when he cut inside from the right, beating two defenders before shooting into the side-netting.
Somma's effort proved the cue for Leeds to take control, with Kilkenny and Falkingham forming a good partnership in the midfield.
The duo combined on the half-hour with Falkingham latching on to a Kilkenny pass before curling the ball beyond Jamie Annerson in the Rotherham goal.
Kilkenny was next to go close when he sent a free-kick skidding wide, following a foul on Tresor Kandol, and moments later the Leeds striker was denied by the quick thinking of Annerson after good play by Falkingham.
The opening to the second period was similar to the first, but it was Rotherham who enjoyed a brief spell on the front foot.
Drewe Broughton knocked an Andy Liddell cross over the bar and Ankergren was called upon to clear an inswinging cross.
At the other end, Kandol was again denied by some quick-thinking by Annerson, but it was 2-0 moments later, courtesy of Somma.
A long punt forward from Ankergren was flicked on and Somma delivered a clinical finish to double United's advantage with 20 minutes remaining.
Somma's second came in similar fashion late on when a long ball from Ankergren caused problems in the Rotherham defence, and the striker was able to cash in with another clinical finish.
