Jonny Howson in action against Wycombe

United's stand-in skipper Jonny Howson says he is more than happy with the club's start to the new season.

United are one of only three League One clubs to win both league fixtures, and the club are also through to the second round of the Carling Cup.

The start is particularly pleasing for midfielder Jonny, who was handed the opportunity to captain the side in the absence of Richard Naylor.

"It's going well," said Jonny.

"We said our performances could be better, but we have three wins and that's what counts.

"We said before the season that we had to get off to a good start, and find a level of consistency because that is what will get us promoted."

United have won all three games with something left in the tank, but both the manager and his players believe there is much more to come.

"Performance-wise we started slow again on Saturday and could have been better on the ball," said Jonny.

"It was the same at Darlington in midweek, but the main thing is we won both games. We'll keep digging away and the performances will come.

"We showed in the second half at Wycombe how we can play, and up until the last few minutes they didn't have a sniff.

"We had a few chances and a few long-range efforts.

"They hit the post and had a good chance late on, but it didn't affect us. We have to cut it out, though, for future games."
