United boss Simon Grayson was delighted with his side's performance against Premier League opposition at Elland Road on Saturday.
United dominated the opening period against a full-strength Blackburn side and looked set to take victory after Jermaine Beckford scored with a delightful finish early in the second half.
But the visitors were handed a lifeline in the 90th minute when Paul Gallagher converted a penalty after Alan Sheehan was adjudged to have fouled Benni McCarthy.
"We played very well," said the Leeds boss.
"We had good shape, looked organised, were hard to break down and in possession we moved the ball well and created good chances.
"For 80 minutes I thought we were outstanding, especially in the first half with the chances we created. We hit the post a couple of times and went close on more occasions. We looked bright.
"On the other side of things we closed players down and defended like we can.
"It was a strong Blackburn team. They showed they wanted a good game and we gave them that.
"But it was a big test for our players and they want that every week.
"We have big challenges coming up every week in this league and with Blackburn, and Newcastle and Burnley coming up, they have some good opportunities before the season starts."
