Mike Grella

United striker Enoch Showunmi is backing American marksman Mike Grella to make a big impact after seeing him at close range in pre-season.

Mike joined the club last term and made an immediate impact in the reserves, scoring a stunning hat-trick against Grimsby Town.

He went on to make 12 first team appearances, all coming as a substitute, usually late in games, but he has enjoyed a greater opportunity in pre-season and has caught the eye.

While last season's prolific strikeforce of Jermaine Beckford and Luciano Becchio have already found their scoring boots, and Enoch marked his return from illness with a goal in Ireland, Grella is still searching for his first in a senior shirt.

But Enoch reckons it won't be long before the American striker weighs in and makes a big impression at first team level.

"There's some top quality strikers here," he said.

"You have Becks and Becchio who have both done well - Jermaine will always score goals - and there's Grella who has some good touches, so competition is good for the club.

"As soon as he scores that first goal I'm sure they will fly in.

"He's been a bit unlucky in pre-season, but there's other games coming up and I'm sure he will go out and score a hat-trick against someone very soon."
