Jonny Howson in action against Glentoran

United manager Simon Grayson says he is more than happy with his side's preparations for the season so far.

Grayson and his players returned from Northern Ireland on Sunday evening after playing two games across the water, and they returned to Thorp Arch on Monday in readiness for games against Grimsby Town and Wealdstone on Tuesday night.

United signed off in Belfast with a 3-1 win against Glentoran, taking the goals tally to eight in three pre-season outings.

"Hopefully we put on a performance for our large following on Saturday," said the boss. "We had a good week in Ireland.

"Some of the goals we have scored have been fantastic moves and that's been particularly pleasing.

"We've been bright, energetic and have shown good quality. We have created some good opportunities and played some good stuff."

The next steps towards the new campaign are taken on Tuesday when the club will field teams against Grimsby Town and Wealdstone.

"We'll take 16 players to each game and the majority will play 90 minutes, but both games will be good work-outs," said the boss.

"From there we have games against Blackburn, Newcastle, and Burnley, and we were working towards a positive result against Exeter on the first day of the season.

"It's all about fitness and preparing at this stage. Everything is geared up for a long, hard slog, and hopefully a successful slog.

"It was back to work at Thorp Arch on Monday, ready for a big week in training, but we've had a successful time."
