Jermaine Beckford celebrates his goals at Shelbourne

United manager Simon Grayson declared himself more than happy with his side's attacking performance against Shelbourne on Tuesday night.

But the boss says there will be increased focus on defensive work as the pre-season campaign steps up after United let a two-goal lead slip against the Eircom League side to draw 2-2.

"It was a very good work-out and it was lively from the off," said the manager.

"There were a few tackles, some good football, and I thought we were excellent in the first half. We moved the ball around, created chances, and could have scored four.

"Some of the play, passing and movement, and some of the chances were excellent. There was incisive passing and movement and we're looking to build it up."

Jermaine Beckford had given United a 2-0 lead before the hosts hit back twice after the break. Leeds finished the stronger, but were unable to force a winner during the final moments.

"It's always difficult when you make so many changes at half-time," said the boss.

"It can be mentally difficult and be hard to get in. It was disappointing to concede two goals, but it's all about fitness at this stage.

"It is something we'll address. I don't want to go into the season conceding too many goals. I want to be solid as a unit.

"We haven't done any work as indivduals or units at this time, but we will be working on it.

"Players are doing certain things they wouldn't do on a Saturday in terms of runs and leaving the back-four unprotected because of fitness. We would be naturally harder to break down on a Saturday because they wouldn't do those things.

"But I am pleased with incisive sharpness we're showing."

The boss was also full of praise for Beckford and his first half-strike partner Mike Grella.

"Becks took his goals well," said the boss. "Him and Mike looked excellent together.

"Mike showed his class and good passing and movement, and he will feel the benefit of 60 minutes."
