United manager pleased with York exercise...
United manager Simon Grayson declared himself happy with his squad's first pre-season run-out.
Grayson fielded 23 players at York on Sunday - two different XIs in each half with an additional goalkeeper - and United were denied what looked like a nailed-on victory when York scored twice in second half stoppage time.
Honours ended even with a 3-3 draw, and the manager was delighted with the work-out.
"Everybody got 45 minutes and we came through with no injuries," he said. "It was a good workout for everybody.
"You concentrate on fitness, playing on a bigger pitch and getting the runs in. We have to build it up towards August 8.
"I was disappointed we conceded three goals - two were terrific strikes - but it's all about blowing the cobwebs away. I use these early games as a way of the lads finding their feet. We move on with stuff now.
"It was an excercise for everyone to get some football time."
Luciano Becchio scored United's first goal, but it was two of the younger members of the squad who struck in the second half.
Mike Whitwell, a prolific goalscorer in the Under-18s last season, scored with his first touch and central defender Andy Milne also netted.
"Mike came with us to help with the kit and with Alan Sheehan unfit, he became the sub," explained the boss.
"He then scored with his first touch in a first team jersey so he'll remember it forever.
"Andy Milne also got his first goal, Tom Lees was useful, and Liam Darville got an opportunity.
"It's good we were able to bring them through and they showed the qualities we have."
