Defenders in pole position, but chances for all...
Paul Huntington and Lubomir Michalik will be among a number of players hoping to make an early impression on manager Simon Grayson at York City on Sunday (1pm).
With Richard Naylor sidelined with a back injury and Rui Marques ruled out of United's pre-season opener after sustaining an injury while on international duty with Angola during the summer, central defenders Huntington and Michalik will get an early opportunity to impress at York.
The players will head for York after nine days of pre-season training, and the manager is looking forward to the first game.
"The majority of the lads are in good fettle," said the boss.
"They've been working hard, they've done ball work, running, swimming and we've tried to keep things varied.
"We've got a good squad to pick from and a few bodies to select from.
"Rui's had some time with Angola so he's not quite back with us yet in terms of fitness and Richard is out with his back, but everybody else is fit and raring to go.
"They've done their running, but to play a game there is an excitement. It's a different type of fitness."
The likes of David Prutton and Alan Sheehan, who failed to figure in the manager's plans towards the end of last season, will also be in the 22-man squad which travels to York City.
The boss has said that there will be incomings and outgoings over the next few weeks, but he says all his squad are starting fresh after the summer break.
"I'm sure there will be a couple of players go, but that is down to the numbers we have because we have a decent size squad," said the manager.
"If opportunities are limited I will be honest with them. I was with Peter Sweeney, and that'll be the case with one or two and it will down to them as individuals to stay or take on a new challenge.
"Prutts has come back and is fit and sharp. They all came back on a level playing field, whatever people did last year is history.
"It's a new season and new start. They'll be involved and we'll look at it, but I'm not discounting anyone at this stage.
"Players can always change your mind."
One player unlikely to figure at York is striker Tresor Kandol. The Congo international spent last season on loan at Millwall and Charlton, and returned to join his Leeds team-mates this week.
"Tres has come back, but he's not trained as much as the others so he's not quite up to speed on the football side," added the boss.
"He's under contract here, and like any player he has the chance to impress."
