Peter Sweeney in pre-season action against Bray Wanderers

Grimsby Town boss Mike Newell has again expressed his desire to sign Leeds United midfielder Peter Sweeney.

The former Stoke man joined the Mariners on loan towards the end of last season after failing to figure under either Gary McAllister or Simon Grayson at Leeds.

The 24-year-old made eight appearances as Grimsby beat the drop from League Two last season, but he hasn't featured in a Leeds shirt since the 2-1 win against Gillingham in May 2008.

Speaking to Mariners World, Grimsby boss Newell said: "We'll do everything possible to try and persuade the player that is the place to come to play.

"I know he enjoyed his time here. It was a successful time. He is a good lad on and off the pitch and has good ability.

"I've said before he is a player I am really keen on and would like to get him to Grimsby."

United manager Simon Grayson has said he expects players to move in and out of Elland Road before the new season gets underway on Saturday August 8.
