Sam Sodje on his Leeds debut

New loan signing Sam Sodje has wasted little time in settling into his new surrounds at Leeds United.

The Reading defender, who was handed a standing ovation after impressing on his debut against MK Dons on Saturday, was so overcome by the show of support at Elland Road, that he says he cannot believe he has joined a club fighting for promotion from League One.

"This isn't the level a club like Leeds United should be at," said Sodje. "Are you kidding me? Leeds shouldn't be in League One at all.

"You see the training ground, the stadium and the fans. It's ridiculous. I think the FA should put Leeds in the Premiership.

"No way is this a League One club, or even a Championship club. It doesn't matter what happens on the pitch, the FA should put Leeds in the Premiership.

"You don't want to drop leagues when you come out like this, but as soon as I knew Leeds were interested it wasn't a step down. i was delighted to come to Leeds. You don't get bigger than this.

"On Saturday, the players were fantastic. I felt like I'd been here for two or three years and I really enjoyed it."

Sodje made a huge impression on his debut, alongside United captain Richard Naylor at the heart of the defence.

Playing his first competitive game since a loan spell at Watford was cut short by injury last September, Sodje featured for 60 minutes against MK at Elland Road. In that time, he settled quickly, demonstrated why he carries the reputation for being such a powerful header of the ball, and became an instant favourite for much of the crowd.

"Hopefully the fans will see more of that," he said.

"If they were pleased on Saturday, hopefuly they will be delighted in two or three weeks when I've played a few games.

"I haven't been playing for six or seventh months and this was a chance to get a game. It went well, but it showed that I haven't played for a long time.

"My hamstring was tight, but when you've been out for so long..."

Rather like fellow loan recruit Liam Dickinson, who scored the winning goal for Stockport at Wembley last May, Sodje also has plenty of experience of the Play-Offs.

He was involved with Brentford in 2004/05 and 2005/06, and at West Brom the following season, when the Baggies lost to Derby at Wembley.

"I've been in the Play-Offs with Brentford and West Brom and I know what it's like," he added.

"Hopefully we will get there and win it."
